Play, organize and rip your audio collection with foobar2000

Play, organize and rip your audio collection with this must have Windows application.

Foobar-2000-iconIf you’re like me, music is a big part of your life. Finding the right tool to play it where you want, when you want without having a bunch of junk installed on your computer is important. This is one of the biggest reasons why I like foobar2000. It’s a music player for Windows, and it supports a portable mode.

Foobar2000 is an advanced freeware audio player for the Windows platform. Some of the basic features include full unicode support, ReplayGain support and native support for several popular audio formats including MP3, MP4, AAC, CD Audio, WMA, Vorbis, FLAC, WavPack, WAV, and AIFF.

The app is easily customizable with a custom interface. It contains support for advanced music file tagging and supports gapless playback. The app will also rip audio CD’s and convert the files to your format of choice.

foobar2000 is a really nice music player. Its portable, meaning you can specify why it and all of its configuration file go. When installed in this mode, it can be moved to a USB stick and taken and used on another computer. This is especially helpful if you can’t or don’t want to install something on a shared PC.

The app is nice, but it doesn’t sync with any mobile device like an Android phone or Apple iDevice. Without this type of feature, the app is very outmoded and so very, very 1997. While its portable mode is nice, and some of its visualizations are cool, it seems very much a relic of the past. Nearly every PC sold today comes with some kind of music player. Both Windows Media Player and iTunes are free; and while foobar2000 is as well, they also sync’s with portable music players where foobar2000 does not.

How to recover lost data from a crashed application

What if the application in which you were working has crashed, and your precious document has been lost? This could be a question without an answer, if you cannot read the information saved by the Windows OS in your PC’s RAM.

Also known as memory address space, this is where all the applications that run on your computer load there content for further use by the operating system. In case you cannot read its content, you won’t be able to recover your lost data. But with DumpIt, this is actually possible. All you have to do is to double-click this executable and this tiny utility will generate a copy of your PC’s physical memory in the current directory.

This copy is nothing else but a huge binary file which has to be read with a hex editor in order to be able to identify the content of your lost document. Free Hex Editor Neo can be a good choice to cover all this file. All you have to do is launch the program, access the Search function and type a word or phrase from the lost document. For Microsoft Word users, check the Unicode string option and search again. In this way the program will locate immediately the Word file.

DumpIt is free to use and it has been developed as a fusion of win32dd and win64dd (former products with the same functionality developed by the MoonSols company) in one executable. It has only 203 KB of memory, a portable character, and its easy to use. There are rarely occasions when you will actually use this program, but its unique utility makes it a must-have tool when such a disaster strikes.
