Browse the web in a totally new and fun way with RockMelt

209998-rockmelt-icon_original.jpgBrowsing the web is by far the most popular and most predictable internet past time.  Everybody does it all the time, every day, out loud.  The problem with surfing is that its predictable. Browser to browser, computer to computer, the web is always the web, and it’s always the same.  That’s why I like RockMelt. It’s a new kind of web browser for Windows.

RockMelt provides a fundamentally better Web experience by re-imagining the browser around how you use the internet.  It has a built in chat client so you can talk to your friends whenever you want.  It’s got social networking built into it, so you can update a status, tweet links and easily post on Facebook Walls.

RockMelt has an interesting feature called Social Reading that is sort of like RSS for your social networking sites. It gathers news from all of your friends and puts it in one place.  RockMelt supports sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr.  Social Reading syncs automatically, so you don’t ever have to manually refresh it unless you want to.

RockMelt concentrates on pictures and videos. Its display is visually pleasing, and the app brings you the best of these as soon as they’re published. Its big tiles support swiping – to the right saves a story for later, to the left removes it from the stream. You get to interact with the internet the way you want to.

RockMelt is a different browsing experience and one that you may just fall in love with, provided you can get used to it. It’s got just about every social network built into it, so you can interact with them at your leisure.  Its multimedia-centric and built for speed. The only downside is that the rest of the web is formatted a bit differently and RockMelt attempts to present the web in its own image. I like it, but it doesn’t quite fit everywhere…

TweetDeck – Take complete command of your Twitter account

Take complete command of your Twitter account with this easy to use Windows app.

Social networking is huge and hot right now. If you active on any major social network, you’re likely active on more than one. Part of being social requires that you broadcast to as wide an audience as possible. This is why I like tools like TweetDeck. It’s a social networking tool for Windows.
TweetDeck is a social networking tool for both Facebook and Twitter. It shows you everything you want to see, all at once, so you can stay on top of the happenings within your social networks. Its social media dashboard helps you manage all of your Twitter and Facebook accounts. Like other Twitter apps, it interfaces with the Twitter API to allow users to send and receive tweets, view profiles as well as update and view your FB Status and Timeline.

TweetDeck changed from an Adobe AIR application to native apps for both Windows and Mac OS X. there’s a web version of TweetDeck for WebKit-based browsers. The app’s most drastic update dropped support for other social networks like LinkedIn, Google Buzz, Foursquare, and MySpace. Clearly missing still is support for Google+. TweetDeck is a decent app, and you can’t beat its price. However, earlier versions were clearly more popular with users; and it would be nice if it included support for a few other networks.

If you’re already a Google+ user, you’ll be able to invite your friends, family and anyone who wants to join the service. During those months of been invite-only, Google made over 100 different improvement but it’s still in the early stages. Actually, Google itself says it’s “nowhere near done”, and improvements are still on the way. However, the new social network is growing at a really fast pace and it will be a real competitor to Facebook.

Best new Features

  • Hangouts for smartphones – you can now join Hangout video chats from your smartphone
  • Live broadcast – you can now broadcast your Hangout to as many people as you want with “Hangouts On Air”

Google unveils its own social network to challenge Facebook

Did you hear about Google introducing its own social network,Google+ ? A project that aims to make online sharing more like real life.

Well, no one can tell if this is going to be a real Facebook challenger but still, if we take a look at Google+, we can admit that is quite a bundle of joy and looks really promising.

Google+ was on trial until now and a pilot team was testing the Social Networking capabilities of this service.

Let’s take a look over the introduction video…

Aiming to take advantage of flaws in networking on Facebook, Google said in the past that “Today, the connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools. In this basic, human way, online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it.”

Google said, “We’d like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships, and your interests. And so begins the Google+ project.”

It would offer options of networking, including ‘Circles’ interface for adding friends and sharing ‘what matters, with the people who matter most’ and ‘Hangouts’ interface for group video chat.

If you’re interested and you want to find out more, take a look at the Google+ project website.

Social networking creates big vulnerabilities

After an eight-month study, Palo Alto Networks (an enterprise security and firewall company) released a report that provides a global view into application usage by assessing 28 exabytes of application traffic from 1,253 enterprises between October 2010 and April 2011.

More than 40% of the 1,042 applications that Palo Alto Networks identified on enterprise networks can now use SSL or hop ports to increase their availability within corporate networks. This segment of applications will continue to grow as more applications follow Twitter, Facebook, and Gmail, who all have enabled SSL either as a standard setting or as a user-selectable option in an effort to create the perception of improved security for its end-users.

Contrary to popular opinion, social networking has not meant the death knell of webmail and instant messenger (IM). Compared with 12 months ago, IM traffic, as a percentage of overall traffic has more than doubled, while webmail and social networking increased nearly five times.

As browser-based file sharing applications now use peer-based technology and add clients as a “premium”, the question arises: will the business and security risks introduced by browser-based file sharing follow the same path as those that were introduced by P2P? The frequency of file transfer applications – 92% of FTP, 82% of P2P, and 91% browser-based file sharing—each provide business value, but represent security and business risks that may include exploits, malware vectors, and data loss.

Rene Bonvanie, vice-president of marketing at Palo Alto Networks declared:

“This data should be a wake-up call for IT teams who assume encrypted traffic is mainly HTTPS or for those who still believe that social networking usage is not taking place on their corporate networks.”
