Keep your DVD collection up to date with EMDB – Eric’s Movie Database

If you’re like me, then you love movies. I’ve got literally hundreds of DVD’s in my movie collection. Some of them are physical, some are digital; but they all need organizing. This is where EMDB saved my bacon. It’s a DVD collection app for Windows and its pretty cool.

EMDB is a small utility to keep track of your DVD collection. The app allows you to keep your DVD collection up-to-date. It features automatic data import from IMDB, and can export data to csv, text or to a complete website. It also has thumbnail cover previews.

The thing that I really like is its loan tracker. With it, you can keep track of which friend and relatives have borrowed which movies. Remember the saving my bacon part… ? Yeah…that was it. With such a large movie collection, I’ve got friends and relatives pulling things out of my movie cabinets all the time. With EMDB, I know who has what, and how long they’ve had it.

EMDB is a decent DVD catalog manager. The fact that it can pull all of the relevant meta data you would want from IMDB is pretty cool. It would be a winner just with that feature. Its loan tracker, however is what really attracted me to it. I’ve got people sticking their hands in my DVD collection all the time. EMDB makes it very easy to know who has what, and where I might be able to find it when it stays gone too long.

Valve’s Free Movie-Making Tool Now Available To Download

Valve, the creator of game franchises such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life and Portal,  just announced the open beta release of Source Filmmaker – Valve’s in-house movie-making software is now available to download.

Source Filmmaker works from inside the Source engine and its been used by Valve to create all its animated short films, including those in the “Meet the Team” series of Team Fortress 2 shorts. Because the SFM uses the same assets as the game, anything that exists in the game can be used in the movie, and vice versa. By utilizing the hardware rendering power of a modern gaming PC, the SFM allows storytellers to work in a what-you-see-is-what-you-get environment so they can iterate in the context of what it will feel like for the final audience.

Below you can see a short clip created with SFM…

Source Filmmaker system requirements:

  • OS: Windows 7 / Vista (Windows 7 64 bit suggested)

Find subtitles with Sublight

Sublight is a freeware application ready to find the missing subtitle for your beloved movie. You just have to choose the video file from your hard-drive, activate the search function, and the application will connect to the database from where it will extract the right subtitle for your movie version.

Simple as that, the process of finding the right subtitle is now a manner of 2 clicks with the help of this application. But as fast it may be, the search process is not always successful. That’s because the Sublight database relies on the community activity, which at the moment is not enough to cover all movie files that are released worldwide. Plus, a lot of junk files will obstruction your search success.

In this case, when Sublight might return too many results, you can search for the subtitle manually by typing the title of the movie. If the number of results is still humongous, you can use filters based on language, rate, publisher and even number of discs for your video version.

For the best match, pay attention to the highlighted entries, as these subtitles are marked by members of the Sublight community as suitable for your video version. In general this means that the subtitle file is properly synced to your video file. You can also mark subtitles as properly synced by right clicking their entry and choosing the Link label. Same action goes for creating reports for false match-ups: right-click the entry and choose Invalid link.

Being a freeware product, Sublight requires .NET Framework 2.0-3.5 to be installed on your machine. At the moment this useful application runs only on PC’s running Windows OS.

Take big screen excitement anywhere with video eyeglasses

We all love the feeling of high quality, big screen TV. Movies seem better and video games more exciting. But even if mobile gadgets  have made it possible to take high quality videos wherever you are, unfortunately, the small screen can’t give you the excitement of a real big screen TV.  Well, recently I discovered a line of video eyeglasses which emulates the experience of viewing a movie (or playing a game) on the big screen…

Available in 3 versions, the Wrap 230, the Wrap 280 and the Wrap 920, these video eyeglasses are compatible with most portable video devices including iPods, iPhones, DVD players, media players, gaming systems and mobile phones with video out.

Moreover, thanks to superior battery technology, they’re able to run for up to 6 hours on each charge.

DVDFab Blu-ray Copy 8.0.8.2 supports to create .miniso files

cover box

DVDFab Blu-ray Copy was updated to 8.0.8.2 version with an added option: Create .miniso file in output folder to be mounted by DVDFab Virtual Drive . It can produce a new format (.miniso) from now on, then DVDFab Virtual Drive 1.2.0.0 or later version can mount this one with image file, and the output Blu-ray folder with .miniso file in it can be played by PowerDVD or other Blu-ray software player since just simulates a normal ISO image file.

The new feature has been implemented because some Blu-ray player software cannot play Blu-ray movie by folder, such as PowerDVD. But if you just copy Blu-ray movie to folder on hard drive for backup, it is hard to watch it. So in this update, Blu-ray Copy supports to copy Blu-ray movie to the folder on your hard drive with a file in the format of .miniso included. Then you can use DVDFab Virtual Drive to mount the .miniso file in, and play the Blu-ray folder content by PowerDVD, just like playing a normal ISO image file.
