ROBLOX

Create and play online games with this cool Windows tool set.

ROBLOX-iOS-IconHalf the fun of playing a game is creating it. When you can create your own levels with your own mazes, it makes for an interesting time. This is one of the reasons why I like Roblox. Its an online gaming tool set and game for Windows.

ROBLOX, is a huge multiplayer online for kids and teens ages 8-16. Players can create their own virtual world, where they and other online members may enter and socialize. Games on Roblox can be scripted using a sandboxed edition of Lua 5.1, and can be used to schedule events that occur in-game, creating different scenarios.

To get the most out of ROBLOX, you have to create an either an online free or premium account. Your account gives you a customizable character and in-game real estate to play in. In the online game, you use various blocks and bricks to build whatever you want. If you’re stuck for an idea, you can always look at other user’s worlds or ROBLOX games that have been created.

The first thing that’ll strike you about ROBLOX is that it’s blocky. Building in Roblox is much like building with Legos. With time and effort, you can build enormous and complex buildings, structures and objects. However, you have to accept the game’s design limitations.

Roblox is very much like Mine Craft for those that play Xbox. The game is ok, and very basic for this modern world of powerful computer gaming systems and desktops. However, younger kids will definitely like making their own structures and playing game levels they’ve created themselves. If you don’t have an Xbox 360 console and have kids that want to play a Mine Craft like game, this is definitely an awesome choice.

Rediscover engaging combat and the delight of exploration

If you are looking at your first foray in to the world of MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game) or simply wishing to add a new virtual world to your repertoire, then Runescape will offer a treat for you.

Set in the magical world of Gielinor this globally popular online community game will see you battle it out with millions of other players throughout mythical towns, cities and oceans. Its setting has a medieval feel and caters for all sorts of skill and play, rather than being based purely on combat as many games of its type are. It’s free to download and as it runs on Java software there is no need to download specific software. It’s free to use at a basic level although you do get access to more skills, areas and quests when you upgrade to a paid membership; monthly fees are relatively cheap.

The 3D graphics are in the main satisfactory and with over 100 quests and new content, quests and challenges being adding regularly there’s always something new and fresh to keep you hooked. Gaining new levels of skill however can be quite repetitive as you need to do the same thing over and over in order to progress.

The online community is vibrant and friendly and is monitored by moderators to ensure a pleasant experience is enjoyed by all. If you are beyond your teens you may find it a little youthful, as it’s this age category where Runescape sees the most success.

Overall Runescape offers a great online gaming experience, if heed is to be taken it’s to keep an eye on the vast number of hours that it could easily consume!

Mumble – the open-source group voice chat software designed mainly for online gaming

Mumble is a VOIP (Voice over IP) application which allows users to speak on a chat channel, as in a telephone conference call. It was designed for gamers, who use the software to communicate with other players in the same multiplayer game.

Mumble is a relatively new arrival on the VOIP scene; it has been around in a stable form for about a year, at the time of writing. It takes advantage of newer technologies, such as sound quality and low latency, removing the noise from the audio input.

It is a cross-platform product which is free and open source. It is integrated with the game software in a customisable game overlay so that as well as hearing the other players, you can identify which is speaking. It supports advanced voice activity detection and will record conversations if set up.

To start you must set up the Mumble Server, called murmur, which features secure communication and full extensibility.

We think this is a product with a bright future. It looks easy to work with on the face of it, but running into difficulties is unnerving. It has live support team contact available. There is some technical support from community forums, and there looks to be a wish list for future development. It looks and feels like a product that is on its way up and it will be interesting to see if it develops for usage outside the game arena, but first it needs to grow new functionality, to include things like a user database.

An Oldie, But Still Going Strong, Tibia

First released in 1997, Tibia is one of the most long-running Massively Multi-Player Online Role Playing Games (MMORPGs). With more than a decade to draw in new players the userbase is huge, with active player numbers in the six figures. Unfortunately the global appeal of the game can make interactions difficult, as many players do not speak the same languages.

One of the big pluses of this game is the extremely low system requirements – compared to other MMORPGs. Basically any system can handle it. In addition to that, the download is nice and small, making it getting started a breeze. This is however the result to some quite simple graphics that may not be enough for some players that are used to big budget effects.

Players will see a nicely simple user interface, with inventories and other data confined to the side of the screen. Both PvP and non PvP servers are available, and ten years of updates means that there is a lot to play through and experience.

The free version will leave your character somewhat limited, with your character restricted to only four vocations and a limited list of features, unless you pay extra.

Tibia wouldn’t still be running if it wasn’t an enjoyable game. If you can get past the graphics then you will find a huge community and a lot of content. The free version is well worth your time and you might find yourself happily paying for extra features.
