Codelobster PHP Edition

Create cool web sites and apps with this free portable IDE for Windows.

CLPHP-01

There’s a huge movement from the White House to get the children of the country to learn to program. The thought and idea behind this is that if they start at a young age, they’ll get very good at it, and perhaps have jobs available to them to help them through paying for a college education and/or to continue to support them after they get out of college. The earlier they start, the better they will be.

Unfortunately, development tools can be expensive; and there are a lot of languages to pick from. Some of the easiest and most valuable languages are web-based; which is why I like things like Codelobster PHP Edition. It’s a free, easy to use PHP development environment for Windows and I think you’re going to like it.

Most IDE’s are expensive. You can pay up to $500 USD for a single seat license for some tools, and even more for others. Codelobster PHP Edition is free and it can auto highlight PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with autocomplete. It also has a powerful, built-in PHP debugger, a code validator, and a SQL manager. Help is also very near. If you get stuck, you can always tap F1 and get the help you need. The internal debugger also automatically senses your server settings and configures the files you need so you can use the debugger. This is totally awesome on a free tool.

Coding and integrated development environments that support a number of languages – HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP – are usually very expensive. Finding one that’s free, let alone with code and pair highlighting, autocomplete as well as context and dynamic help is pretty cool. Codelobster PHP Edition also supports code collapsing, allowing you to shrink up entire blocks of code so that you can find what you want or need to work in quickly and easily. This is really cool to have in a free tool, and the fact that Codelobster PHP Edition has it is pretty awesome.

Another big plus is that the app also supports a plug-in architecture, so if you want to include, JQuery, SQL or other snippets and objects in your code, you can. However, those plug-ins may not be free, so you need to be aware of that.

hl_icon2Get a handle on your source code and see what’s what with this handy Windows coding tool.

I’ve been in the software development biz for quite some time now, and the crafting of source code in many ways is just that – a craft or an art. Over the years, the best way I’ve learned to do that is to have a special app to help write and highlight certain syntax. This is probably the biggest reason why I’m interested in apps like Highlight. It’s a source code development app for Windows.

Highlight converts source code, like HTML, XHTML, RTF, LaTeX, TeX, SVG, BBCode and terminal escape sequences to code with colored syntax highlighting. Language definitions and color themes are customizable. The app was designed to offer a flexible but easy way to use syntax highlighting for several output formats. Instead of hardcoding syntax or coloring information, all relevant data is stored in configuration scripts. These scripts may be altered or enhanced with plug-ins.

Highlight is a decent code editor, offering a way to highlight code to make it easy for coders to identify specific blocks of code by functionality – or color – with just a quick glance. This is especially helpful if you have to look for different loops or segments of code within a specific file when debugging or modifying or enhancing existing code.

This is great for programmers and testers; but won’t see much use outside of the development lifecycle type.

Everest the complete auditing tool

Everest is a system information utility and auditing tool designed for home users. The product has been around for some time and development on it stopped several years ago. The product is effectively discontinued. However, do not be discouraged by this: it has useful functionality.

Everest can analyze and present through a helpful ‘windowsy’ hierarchical file interface information about your pc. This includes computer, motherboard, display, multimedia, storage, network, DirectX and devices. It will collect a good amount of information, and is a useful way of finding out what is available on a PC, for example, it detects hard drive controllers.

This information can be output to local disk, network share, e-mail or ADO database connections in text, CSV, HTML or XML formats. It has a ‘Favourites’ tab to which you can add those things you are most interest in. It is also useful if you need to benchmark one PC with another – it enables the collection and comparison of data such as memory reads, writes, latency.

If you are persistent enough to be able to stay in control in the face of unexpected error messages you may get some benefit from this tool. It has grown up and pay for siblings (now at FinalWire Ltd) which will do everything Everest does and more, and are up to date with new drivers, devices etc., however the point is that Everest Home is free. It is a good starting point for collecting PC information and is worth an initial look.

Edit text based files with EditPlus

Sometimes, a word processor is just too much pomp for the circumstance. Having the right tool for the right job is important. My grandfather, a master carpenter, pounded this into my head as a child. This is one of the reasons why I really like EditPlus for coding and other programmatic tasks. It’s a text editor for Windows.

EditPlus is a Windows-based text, HTML, PHP, Java editor and Hex Viewer. Its a good Notepad replacement, but it also offers many powerful features for programmers and Web page authors.

EditPlus features syntax highlighting for HTML, PHP, Java, C/C++, CSS, ASP, Perl, JavaScript, VBScript, Python and Ruby on Rails. It can also be extended for other programming languages based on custom syntax files. It contains a seamless web browser for previewing HTML pages, and contains support for FTP commands for uploading local files directly to your FTP server.

Other EditPlus features include a Hex Viewer, HTML toolbar, user tools, line number, ruler, URL highlighting, auto completion, clip text, column selection, powerful search and replace, multiple undo/redo, spell checker, and customizable keyboard shortcuts.

Empower your development team with WampServer

If there’s one thing that I know well, its software development and the web.  While its not as easy as some people might think, its tools like WampServer that make things a heck of a lot easier than they could be. WampServer is a web based development environment for Windows, and its easy to use and admin.

Having a reliable development environment for your web apps isn’t just about a decent XML/HTML editor.  You need a web server to help you view your pages and see how they would react in the wild.  WampServer is a Windows web development environment. It allows you to create web applications with Apache2, PHP and a MySQL databases and then test them to insure they function correctly.

The functionality of a web server is to allow for the surfing or browsing of web pages. In order for that to happen, they have to be served up, or made available to the file browser.  This is WampServer’s main function. I’m not going to go into additional details here.  However, from an administration point, which is where Devs and Dev Managers will be concerned, WampServer’s easy to use.

With a left click on WampServer’s tray icon, you will be able to manage your Apache and MySQL services.  This gives your applications access to both web and database services so that specific pages can be displayed and database elements called and written to from them.  You can switch services online or offline, giving access to a broader audience or only to the localhost, or I should say, to yourself.

Edit the code of your web pages with Firebug

Firebug is a surprisingly powerful add-on for the Firefox web browser. Aimed at web developers, Firebug lets you examine and edit the code of your web pages in your browser window. It also allows you to examine

Firebug lets you view HTML, CSS, and JavaScript components of your web page, so if something isn’t displaying properly — an element is in the wrong place, text doesn’t appear the way you expect, or a piece of JavaScript doesn’t do what it’s supposed to — it’s much easier to work out what’s gone wrong and fix it.

The add-on comes into its own with CSS in particular. Firebug lets you see at a glance which rules of CSS apply to a particular element. Testing different rules no longer involves laboriously changing code in an editor, uploading it to your web space and refreshing the page every time you want to try something out. You can input the new code in Firebug and immediately see how it will affect the page you’re working on.

Despite being an add-on itself, Firebug is meaty enough to support its own add-ons, expanding its functionality — providing information specific to a package such as Drupal, for example, or adding reference materials.

As well as being a development tool, Firebug can also enhance your understanding of web programming by allowing you to view the code of any exiting website in detail. Unlike the “View Source” command, which only gives you a limited glimpse into the underlying workings of a web page, Firebug supplies considerable detail about each element so you can quickly gain an understanding of how a particular look or function was achieved.
