Apple Reveals 2013-10-22 as iPad 5 Day

apppppleApple will announce a bevy of new iPad and MacBook hardware in time for the 2013 Holiday Buying Season
Apple has recently announced that 2013-10-22 is the day they will unveil a boat load of new hardware for both their iPad and MacBook lines. For those keeping score, that’s twice in two months that Apple will be announcing new products, which is unusual for the organization that prides itself on secrecy and exclusivity. I mean… you don’t usually get this much Apple goodness shoved together. They usually take a while between announcements to allow us to lather ourselves up into a rumor frenzy.

While details of the event remain on the most part under wraps, the date of the event was uncovered more than a week ago.

Details on the specifics of the event are still a bit sketchy. However, it is anticipated that the iPad 5, iPad mini 2 and updates to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lines of Apple’s laptops will be announced. Apple should also announce the general availability of OS X 10.9 Mavericks as well. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and will start at 10 a.m. PT.

I’m still working on my Mavericks review, and I will have it completed before Apple’s alleged announcement on 2013-10-22. Please watch for it on Soft32 as there’s some really GREAT stuff built into the latest version of Apple’s desktop OS.

Additional rumor fodder has the iPad 5 sporting a 64bit processor. This could put additional pressure on the PC market as virtualization apps allow lean-back devices, like the iPad, to make better use of both network and stationary PC resources. It’s going to be a lot easier to connect your iPad to your work network and make use of the office PC through your iPad. With the right kind of keyboard and cover, your iPad 5 is going to give serious competition to ultrabooks and other tablet like PC’s like Microsoft Surface/Pro and Surface/ Pro 2.

Test your PC out for gaming capabilities with 3DMark Vantage

Gaming seems to be the stuff right now.

If you’re a serious PC advocate, whether on a Mac, a PC or a Linux box, you’re most likely doing some kind of gaming. This is one of the reasons why I really like tools like 3DMark Vantage. It’s a graphics benchmarking tool for Windows.

3DMark Vantage is the industry standard benchmark tool for DirectX 11-based gaming PCs. It includes two graphics tests, two CPU tests and six feature tests. 3DMark Vantage is one of the best ways to consistently and reliably test DirectX 11 with real world, game-like loads.

The Basic Edition is free.  The Professional Edition unlocks all of the app’s features including custom testing options, unlimited test runs and priority customer support. A commercial license enables you to use the benchmark for business purposes, including testing for performance, standards compliance and stability.  For research and development including component evaluation, burn-in testing and competitor analysis and for promotional use including trade shows, consumer events, overclocking competitions and other sales and marketing activities, 3DMark Vantage is a must have tool.

The app’s benchmark presets offer a convenient way of scaling the load to provide relevant results for all levels of hardware. These settings represent more advanced levels of visual quality, and a score is produced when running the tool when completed. That score is calculated differently for each preset, and scores are not comparable across different presets.

Discover all of the devices connected to your computer with Speccy

What’s the first thing you do when you buy a new computer…well, besides turn it on, of course? You check out all of the specs and components of course! Some of the best fun can be in discovering just how powerful your new computer is. That’s why I like applications like Speccy. It’s a system utility for Windows.

Speccy gives you detailed statistics on every piece of hardware in your computer. You get detailed info on your CPU, Motherboard, RAM, graphics cards, hard disks, optical drives, audio support, etc. Additionally Speccy tells you the operating temperatures of your different components, so you can easily see if you’ve got a heat problem.

While Speccy may seem like an application for system administrators and power users, it’s easily usable by everyone. If you need to add more memory to your system, for example, you can check how many memory slots your computer has and what memory is already installed. Then you can go out and buy the right type of memory to add on or replace what you’ve already got.

If you’re going to be selling your PC, you can use Speccy to quickly list out the components. If you’re buying a PC, you can use Speccy to check that the computer has what the label says it has.

Speccy is a decent application; and the cost is definitely right. While the app is free, a system information app is something that you won’t use every day. However, it does a very good job for what it does. If you need to find out what components you have in your PC, Speccy is a great app to do that.

Get detailed information about your computer hardware with CPU-Z

Troubleshooting PC issues isn’t always easy. Hardware issues… Software issues… Issues with software and peripherals… sometimes it’s difficult to know which end of your PC is giving you grief. This is one of the reasons why I like CPU-Z. It’s a hardware detection tool for Windows.

CPU-Z is freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system. It gives you the name and number of your CPU, its core stepping and process information, package information, core voltage information, as well as information on instructions sets and cache information.

When it comes to your motherboard, you get vendor, model and revision; BIOS model and date, Chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge) and sensor; as well as the Graphic interface and amount of memory. Speaking of memory, when it comes to the RAM installed in your system, you’ll also get the specifics of frequency and timings, Module(s) specification using SPD (Serial Presence Detect), as well as vendor, serial number, and a timings table.

Getting detailed information on your hardware can be very important if you’re trying to troubleshoot your PC or if you’ve purchased a PC third hand, and need to find out what’s installed in it so you can safely modify or upgrade it. CPU-Z is a great little utility for providing you specific information on your PC’s components. If you’re running a virtual machine, though, don’t look to get too much information from it. I tried and was unable to get it to give me much more information other than the type of processor I had.

Scan, fix and repair issues on your computer with Reimage

The Windows Registry is a touchy thing. Screw up your Registry, and I don’t care how great your PC is. The performance is going to tank. This is one of the reasons why I like Reimage. It’s a Swiss army knife utility for windows.

With Reimage, you can perform a quick scan of your PC’s Windows operating system. This will help you uncover specific information that will help you understand the problems your system has and what needs to be repaired. While the Registry is one of the items it scans, Reimage does a lot more.

Reimage scans for security threats. Malware including computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware and other malicious and unwanted software are easily identified. Any files that have been tagged as malicious and harmful to your system will be deactivated and quarantined.

If your PC is having hardware issues, such as low memory, hard disk speed, CPU power and temperature, Reimage can recommend solutions for you. For example, if your PC’s CPU temperature is too high, you’ll be advised to clean your cooling fan. If the scan detects low memory, you’ll be advised to add more, etc.

Reimage is also the only PC repair service that has the ability to reverse the damage done to your operating system by replacing any damaged or missing files on a Windows operating system. It does this with the use of a continuously updated online database of over 25,000,000 updated essential components. Every time you run the Reimage program, it will immediately download the latest version and files you’ll need for a successful repair.

Japan earthquake: Notebook players concerned about hardware supplies

Taiwan-based notebook makers, after evaluating the damage caused by Japan’s earthquake on their upstream supply chain, pointed out that supplies of notebook battery cells and MLCCs were both affected slightly, and makers will need to start planning measures to handle rising prices for components such as DRAM, according to sources from notebook makers.

In addition to upstream components, PC demand from Japan, which is about 13-15 million units each year, may also be affected by the earthquake and notebook makers are currently in negotiations with their clients about their shipment schedules for Japan, and will consider making some adjustments.

However, notebook production is unlikely to see any major delays since most makers had already prepared a safe level of inventory, but the unclear information from Japan has already caused several players in rush to stockpile more inventory causing DRAM spot prices to rise over 5% on March 14, noted the sources, adding that the same situation may also happen to other components.
