DiskFresh

DiskFresh

Keep your hard drive running at top specs with this Windows utility.

If your microprocessor is the brain of your PC, then its hard drive is definitely its heart. In order to keep your PC running at peak proficiency, you need to keep your hard drive running well. This is one of the main reasons why I like applications like DiskFresh. It’s a hard drive utility for Windows.

DiskFresh is a powerful disk optimization tool. It can inform you if there are damaged or bad sectors on the drive, so you can determine the right time to replace the disk, as well as insure that the content is in the right spot for optimal access. Unlike other tools, it does the bulk of its work as a background task, and it doesn’t interfere with priority tasks.

DiskFresh is a very simple app. As you can see from its UI, there’s not a lot to it. This can be seen as either a pro or a con. Its simple, so it doesn’t waste a lot of resources on eye candy or other information. Unfortunately, its stark display lacks any kind of useful information on fragmentation or other disk usage.

Its biggest plus is that it can work completely in the background and doesn’t take away resources from active tasks.

Everest the complete auditing tool

Everest is a system information utility and auditing tool designed for home users. The product has been around for some time and development on it stopped several years ago. The product is effectively discontinued. However, do not be discouraged by this: it has useful functionality.

Everest can analyze and present through a helpful ‘windowsy’ hierarchical file interface information about your pc. This includes computer, motherboard, display, multimedia, storage, network, DirectX and devices. It will collect a good amount of information, and is a useful way of finding out what is available on a PC, for example, it detects hard drive controllers.

This information can be output to local disk, network share, e-mail or ADO database connections in text, CSV, HTML or XML formats. It has a ‘Favourites’ tab to which you can add those things you are most interest in. It is also useful if you need to benchmark one PC with another – it enables the collection and comparison of data such as memory reads, writes, latency.

If you are persistent enough to be able to stay in control in the face of unexpected error messages you may get some benefit from this tool. It has grown up and pay for siblings (now at FinalWire Ltd) which will do everything Everest does and more, and are up to date with new drivers, devices etc., however the point is that Everest Home is free. It is a good starting point for collecting PC information and is worth an initial look.

Keep your PC running at peak performance with Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro

One of the biggest problems that most Windows PC’s have is poor performance.  After all the hardware tweaking is done and you’ve maxxed your RAM out, if your PC is still slow, and you don’t have a virus, you might need to check the fragmentation level of your hard drive. That’s one of the reasons why I like Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro. It’s a hard drive utility for Windows; and its one of the best.

Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro has four different disk optimization algorithms. Use the Optimize by Access Time method when you want to access frequently used files. The Optimize by Prefetch Layout algorithm speeds up your system loading and application startup. If your goal is to reduce future file fragmentation, the Optimize by Change Time algorithm is the one for you. For complete, refined control, the Optimize by Disk Zone algorithm allows you to manually specify which file types or individual files should be written to faster parts of the drive. Its just a matter of choosing the right method that’s best for you.

Keeping your free space free and uncluttered is important to fast disk access.  With the Free Space Consolidation algorithm, you can greatly slow down the process of file fragmentation. This optimization algorithm merges your drive’s free space into a large contiguous block, making it possible for new files to be written without fragmentation.

The one thing that won’t defrag on a Windows system while its running, are system files currently in use.  These are often in use when a defrag program runs, and as a result, they won’t defragment. Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro’s new Offline Defragmentation engine makes it possible to defragment these important system files. Offline Defragmentation is performed on system boot, before the operating system loads and consolidates the MFT, your Paging file, your Hybernation file and your Windows Registry. Defragmenting system files will make your PC more responsive, speed up system loading and boost its overall performance.

Optimize, clean, protect and repair your computers with Advanced SystemCare 5

We all been through hell one time or another. It’s a place where you find yourself when your computer is driving you insane with problems, glitches, or running awfully slow. There are several problems that could be causing this and the most likely reason is all those irregular settings and errors your operating system may have after some time, or the huge list of programs running behind the scenes that are eating up your computer’s available processing capacity. Now, considering that performing a clean-up and fixing errors is not just time-consuming, but it’s a laborious task even for advanced users, you can’t go wrong with IObit’s software suite for PC maintenance and optimization: Advanced SystemCare.

First launched in 2005, Advanced SystemCare has been around for enough time to evolve into a powerful suite of tuneup tools that can optimize, clean, protect and repair your computers. Now with the release of version 5, the suite brings many improvements, some new features and enhanced usability. One of the most significant features added in the latest version is Active Boost. This new module runs in the background and improves your PC’s performance by optimizing applications RAM and CPU use in real time. Features such as Quick and Deep Care have been also enhanced; the interface improved for easier to use, and Turbo Boost can recover more system resources. Moreover, there is a new cloud technology that ensures the program database is kept updated in order to face malware threats.

Use Defraggler to defrag your entire hard drive, or individual files

Disk defragmentation results in better performance of your computer. That’s why Windows has a build-in tool with this purpose. However, most people avoid defragmenting their disks, even if we all know that it is recommended and can improve PC performance. The reasons is simple: the process takes too long to complete.

One of my favorite third party defragger and also the fastest out there is Defraggler – a tool developed by Piriform – the company behind both CCleaner and Recuva. Defraggler allows to defragment and optimize your local drives or a single file, several files or an entire folder.

Defraggler is also very simply to use. If you would like to analyze your drive to determine how fragmented is prior to defragmentation, just use the Analyze button. Once the analysis will finish, it will show you the visual drive map along with the fragmented files. Sometimes, you simply don’t need to defragment your hard drive, expecially if you’re working with a relatively new PC, you’ve defragmented your drive recently, or you don’t use your PC much.

Your hard drive needs to be defragmented? Simply click the Defrag button. If you want to save some time, there’s is a feature called Quick Defrag, which completes the process 3-4 times faster. However, the compromise, though, is that it won’t use the most intensive, optimal algorithm to reorganize your files. To use this feature, simply click the down-arrow next to Defrag button and select Quick Defrag.

Another great feature is the ability to move large files to the end of the hard drive. Your computer can accesses files faster if they’re at the start of the drive. Defraggler can put the large files you probably don’t access that often (videos, for example) at the end of the drive so that Windows can find the smaller files faster which are accessed more often.
