Garena – Connecting World Gamers

Chat and game with your friends using this gaming platform for Windows.

GAR-01Gaming is one of the biggest reasons behind computer sales. One of the biggest trends in gaming right now is the need to communicate with team mates within your gaming party. That’s one of the reasons why I like Garena. It’s a gaming communications platform for Windows.

Garena is a game platform similar to an instant messenger. Garena allows gamers to develop buddy lists, to chat with friends and to check on game progress and achievements. Gamers are able to form groups or clans, and chat with multiple gamers simultaneously through public or private channels. Garena has also provided a great GTalk platform which is useful for gamers to interact with.

Like other online game services, Garena uses Shells for a virtual currency. Gamers can create their own unique identity by customizing their avatar or changing their names. Users can also use Shells to purchase Gold memberships for instant access to the platform anytime, to create clans, or to buy themselves back in to the platform or to a game or clan.

Garena is a decent PC gaming platform. It allows you to not only play but to communicate with clans and hoards while you play with and against them. It’s a bit on the pricey side, however, as 3000 shells cost $60 USD, and Gold membership will cost you 1900 shells a year.

Information on what games are available and what they cost, over and above your gold membership fee are unclear, and not readily available on the site. Its difficult to understand what might be available and what it might cost.

Xfire – an instant messaging systems for gamers

My oldest son is 6, and he’s turning into quite the gamer. Without being able to read well at all, he was able to complete Pokemon Silver on his Nintendo DSiXL, much to the surprise of me and most of the Geek Squad at the local Best Buy. We don’t have a an X-Box360 or PS3 in the house yet, as most of the games that you’d want those consoles for aren’t age appropriate for my boys. They also don’t have a gaming class PC available to them…yet. However, for those that do, you really want to check out Xfire. It’s a must have gaming utility for Windows

Xfire is the kind of gaming utility that you were wondering would make its way on to the internet a decade or so ago, it’s that cool. With it, you find the games you play. It then tracks how long you play them; and allows you and your friends to find each other so that you can play together.

Once you finally hook up, you can use Xfire to coordinate strategy, strikes and game play. You can chat with other Xfire users, as well as your friends on AIM, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, and Yahoo! Messenger without exiting the game. If you have a hoard to command or are trying to coordinate a multiplayer strike against the enemy, you can bring your friends into a group chat. Best of all, you’re not confined to texting or IM. If the situation requires you to keep your hands on the controls, you can bring everyone into a voice chat and bark orders without a hit to performance or ping.

An Internet Pricing Resource for Gamers

Videogameprices.co.uk is a new online resource for PC and console gamers dedicated to helping them track down the best current prices on popular titles. Taking its cue from the huge success of UK price comparison sites such as gocompare.com and comparethemarket.com in the realms of finance and insurance products, Videogameprices.co.uk has set out to provide UK gamers with a streamlined service tailored specifically to their interests, aggregating the latest comparative prices from the most competitive, reputable games retailers.

The company’s founder, David Newstead hopes that gamers will choose Videogameprices.co.uk as their first port of call for price comparison because of its Price Tracker service. This free service allows registered members to specify list of games they are considering purchasing together with a target price they would like to buy at. At any point that one of the many retailers it tracks hits or beats that threshold, the user will be alerted by email so they can grab the game they want at a price they like.

In the short time that Videogameprices.co.uk has been online it has already attracted thousands of gamers to its service, so its recipe for success seems to be finding approval with its target audience.

Microsoft is looking for “multiple thousands” of Xbox 360 Live members to test a new Xbox 360 disc format; in exchange, Microsoft will send you a free copy of the best-selling Halo: Reach and other branded freebies.
“We are conducting an open call for US based participants for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format,” Major Nelson, the gamertag for Microsoft Xbox Live’s programming director Larry Hryb, announced on his blog.
“We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good,” he wrote.
To qualify, you must live in the continental United States and own an Xbox 360 console. Register at the Microsoft Connect site with your Windows Live ID connected to your Xbox Live Gamertag, Hryb wrote, then sit back and wait for Microsoft to notify you.
Microsoft Xbox 360 hosts public previews every year, most recently in December. But as 1Up.com notes, the tests usually just involve new apps on the Xbox 360 dashboard. This one includes physical items sent to participants.
