AMD Catalyst 11.7 WHQL Released

AMD just released this month’s major update to its Catalyst software suite, Catalyst 11.7 WHQL. The new driver introduces a few major bug fixes, and provides WHQL-signed support for the recently released AMD A-Series APUs, apart from Radeon GPUs and AMD 8-series and 7-series chipset-integrated graphics.

AMD claims to have fixed all outstanding issues related to cursor-lag; a variety of system hangs noted when using HDMI or DisplayPort outputs have been fixed; a number of video playback issues, some generic and some application-specific, were resolved; the “checkerboard” pattern display corruption issue related to Eyefinity on CrossFire setups in DirectX 10 games was fixed; and flickering issues related to Portal 2 were fixed.

The driver doesn’t introduce any new features or performance improvements, but with greater stability, improved performance should naturally follow.

Speed up your PC’s startup times, increase performance and clear out HDD space with Tune Up Utilities 2011

If there’s one thing that I know of, it’s that 90%+ of all people that use a Windows computer, never ever perform any maintenance operations on it. They never empty cache or temporary file folders. They never optimize their hard drive. They never clean out or optimize their registry.  After a couple-three years, people finally start noticing that their computer isn’t as fast as it should be, and they have no idea what to do or even how to start fixing problems that may exist. That’s why I like Tune Up Utilities 2011.

Test your computer’s power capacity with BenchTown

Auslogics have released a free benchmarking tool that can test your computer power capacity and publish the results on their online service. All you have to do is to install the BenchTown client program and register for free on There’s nothing new here, but the way Auslogics designed BenchTown and its online service really impressed me. Everything is user-friendly an requires little to be done from the user point of view.

All you have to do in order to start test your machine is to push the Rate button. The whole process is automatically and takes about 4 – 5 minutes to be completed. The application uses standard stress calculations for each main component of your PC, (CPU, RAM, HDD, VGA). The results will be displayed in the same interface along with an overall mark similar to what 3D Mark has to offer.

Your can also compare your results online with your friends on the BenchTown service. If you don’t have any friends registered on this community, just invite them. You can also view overall charts based on community’s results regarding the type of processor they use, what are the most popular VGA models used, etc.

With BenchTown the testing process becomes simple and fun to analyze even for a casual user. The overall image of his system is no more an enigma due to the comprehensive results and the user-friendly way BenchTown displays them.

Mozilla Foundation develops its own Operating System

One of the biggest promoters of open source software, and the group behind one of the most popular web-browsers (Firefox), Mozilla Foundation, has undertaken a project of developing a mobile operating system referred to as “B2G” or Boot to Gecko, with the catchphrase “booting to the web”. We expect it to be functionally modeled somewhere between Google’s Android and Chrome operating systems. Essentially it is an operating system that boots to the web-browser that can get you browsing the web directly, or use cloud-based application software.

B2G might target a variety of devices ranging from smartphones to tablets and netbooks. Smartphone essentials such as telephony, SMS, camera, Bluetooth, NFC (near-field communication) and USB, will work with the browser via new web APIs. Applications can be cloud-based widgets, or software that uses open developer environments. Basic applications will be functionally identical to many of the apps that ship with Android or even Apple iOS. What’s more, B2G’s kernel and booting substrate will be designed to be 100% compatible with today’s Android-compatible devices such as phones and tablets, so manufacturers don’t have to redesign anything on their side. At this stage the project is still in its infancy, and is seeking community participation, the same participation that made Firefox and Thunderbird applications with the quality of proprietary software.
