 | | 'Paint NET' is a powerful image editor that can successfully replace Microsoft Paint. It provides extra functionality, including layer support, useful drawing tools, and a couple of image effects. The program is suited for people who need to draw relatively simple objects, but don't have any professional image editing software.
This program can't replace professional software completely (i.e. Photoshop), because it has less features. However, being free and its source code being public, gives it a head start. If you need a simple image-editing task, Paint NET comes in handy.
When I first used this software, I was surprised by its user-friendly interface. You don't need to have certain skills to become accustomed to Paint NET. The complete history of your actions is saved and can be viewed inside a floating window. The tools panel, the color selector, and the layers list are also displayed inside floating windows. The toolbar is displayed at all times, allowing you to select the desired brush width, fill style, and font used for applying text to the image. The program also supports semi-transparent colors and layers. It's possible to set the transparency-alpha value of either an entire layer or a single color.
Pluses: The program is simple and powerful. It outclasses many similar products, and, besides, it's free.
Drawbacks / flaws:
In conclusion: This program is a great replacement for Microsoft's Paint. It's definitely worth a try.
