 | | I was searching for a software which can send instant messages on a LAN. I downloaded and tried QuickMessenger, so here is my opinion about it. This application is designed to allow you to send and receive messages from one computer to another. QuickMessenger is very simple, so it doesn't support chat rooms.
It's possible to define groups of users, and send the message to all the users in a group. If you remember the time when Windows 98 was the operating system of choice, you might also remember the WinPopup application which was distributed with it. It's safe to say that QuickMessenger is a clone of the WinPopup application with some minor improvements. The QuickMessenger is compatible with the Windows Messenger service. It can be used for intercepting messages that were sent on your LAN using the "NET SEND" command.
The main window minimizes itself to the system tray by default when sending a message. There's an option in the program's settings dialog which you can use to modify this behavior. Also, if you want to send a message from the program's main window, you must press CTRL+ENTER.
Pluses: QuickMessenger can be used for notifying you of a certain task. You can set the program to display a custom message daily, weekly, or just once.
Drawbacks / flaws: This program is very slow. It takes about two seconds to receive a message on a 100Mbps (usual speed) LAN. It's clear that this program was designed for people who don't communicate too much.
In conclusion: QuickMessenger should be used by people who seldom send or receive messages.
version reviewed: 3.2 QuickMessenger Publisher's Description QuickMessenger is a utility designed to send and receive messages from one computer to another one or a group of computers via the local area network (LAN) under Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003.
QuickMessenger can also capture messages received by the 'NET SEND' command (Messenger Service Window) in order to display incoming messages and you can then reply to your sender. | | | | Download QuickMessenger | Screenshots
