| | Net Spy Pro is both a network monitoring tool and a remote control software. This software package is composed of two applications, a client and a server. The server should be run on any computer that is to be monitored or controlled on the network. On the other side, the client should be run on the computer used by the network administrator.
The server application is in fact a special web server. You can access it through the network from any other computer. When connecting to the server for the first time using an Internet browser, I guess you should know that the default password is 'retinax' (without the quotes). I found this out by reading the help file, which by the way I think is very good. Starting and stopping the server is done by using the program's main window. Even when you close this window, the server still runs in the background.
There are many things you can do with Net Spy Pro. You can remotely monitor virtually every aspect of the computers running the server application. The list of processes and applications, browser favorites, temp histories, open ports, recent documents, and so on, are all accessible through the pages that are served by the server application.
Pluses: Both the program's main window and the web interface are very nicely designed. They are clear and simple, so it should take just a few minutes to learn how to use them. As I said, the help file is well written, so you shouldn't have any problem learning how to use this software. Among other useful features I would like to mention that the program has a built in network scanner, application blocking, IP filtering, chat application logging, and so on.
Drawbacks / flaws: Only one user can be connected to Net Spy Pro at the same time. When another user from the network connects to the server, the previous user is automatically disconnected. Another big flaw is the fact that anyone can view the screenshots that are taken from time to time by the server. These are accessible at an URL that looks like http://computername/getfile/... I suggest you turn off the screenshot recorder, if you want to keep your computer safe.
In conclusion: Net Spy Pro is a great application. Except for the screenshot recorder, everything worked just fine on my network.
