Driver Genius Professional Edition 2005 wants to be a professional device drivers management tool with backup and restore functions for all your installed drivers. Well, it doesn't quite succeed in doing so. Compared to
Driver Magician (a similar application), this program is slower when backing up and restoring drivers.
After I created a compressed backup file with autorun feature, I realized that when restoring, the autorun just extracts the files. I had to manually copy the drivers to their proper location. The extract function and the restore functions are not done by the application in a single step, like
Driver Magician does.
However, the application consists of many useful functions for driver management. Beside being able to backup and restore, it can also update and uninstall certain drivers that are installed on your operating system. The LiveUpdate feature, allows you to connect to the publisher's driver database. You can use this feature to find new versions of the drivers you have installed on your operating system.
I guess it's also worth mentioning that during the evaluation period, the restore function doesn't work. This limitation is removed in the registered version.
Pluses: The user interface is easy to use. You can simply select which type of drivers (sound card, processor, display, etc.) you want to backup, and the application does the job for you. It's also possible to select individual drivers for backing up by selecting their corresponding checkbox before the actual backup process.
Drawbacks / flaws: The backup/restore processes are a bit slow. It took about 30 seconds to backup my sound card drivers on an AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+, 1GB RAM.
In conclusion: The overall performance could be improved a bit. Otherwise, the program does a good job in backing up drivers.
