| | This program can protect both, the files and the folders, on your computer. It adds itself to their context menu, making it easy for you to access its features. File & Folder Protector has a user interface like Windows Explorer. You can view all the protected items in the program's main window.
In order to access the program, you must enter a password. Thus, other people won't be able to unprotect the files, unless they know this password. There are three ways of protecting your data. You can hide the file, password-protect it, or make the item read only.
You should know that when you hide an item, you can't see it anymore. The only way to access that item is by disabling the protection altogether or deleting it from the restricted files and folders list. This list is at the bottom of the application's main window. The program also supports hotkeys for starting and stopping the protection. These keys can be defined through the File and Folder Protector's options dialog.
The program uses a special driver that works at Windows kernel level. This means that there is no way for other people to access the protected files or folders. The downside is that a kernel driver can make your system unstable, if it's not fully compatible with the other drivers installed on your computer.
Pluses: After you unlock the protected items, you can define a time period for them to be accessible. Thus, you can choose to unprotect certain items temporarily.
Drawbacks / flaws: File and Folder Protector is quite stable. However, its kernel driver isn't. It caused my computer to lock up and the screen turned blue (BSOD - Blue Screen of Death). The error message that appeared was "IRQL not less or equal". This error is generally caused by incompatible drivers. I didn't have any problems with my computer before installing this software.
In conclusion: Although my computer crashed once while running this program, what I encountered may not be a common problem. However, I suggest that you test this program thoroughly before deciding to keep it.
