 | | IrfanView is a freeware graphic viewer for all Windows platforms. The publisher states that its purpose is to be accessible enough for a novice and powerful for advanced users. In my opinion, this goal is accomplished. When you install the program, you have the option to associate filetypes with it. There is a button for associating only images with the program which I like because usually I only open images with IrfanView. However, the program has a long list of supported file formats. If you want to open even more file types you could download the plugins suite from the publisher's website.
This software features multi language support, thumbnail/preview options, slideshow and a function that I also use very much: batch conversion and renaming. You can modify the size, compression rate, output format and many more image properties like brightness, contrast, saturation and gamma correction. These adjustments are possible in batch mode, for multiple files, as well as in single image mode.
Even professionals can be amazed when they see the numerous options IrfanView has to offer. Basically anything is possible with this viewer: rotating the image at a certain angle, cropping an area of the image, converting to negative or grayscale, modifying colour levels, zooming, printing images, applying image effects and much more. I am using this viewer for about 5 years now, and I never had any problems with it. It always starts very fast and it displays images very smoothly.
Pluses: For beginners: There is a checkbox called "Auto-rotate image according to EXIF info" in the "JPG/PCD/GIF" tab of the options menu. When checked, IrfanView will automatically rotate the pictures taken with your camera so they will always appear upright. I always check this when I first install the program. For advanced users: The program has the option of displaying EXIF (extended information about your pictures) data when you are in fullscreen mode. You'll be able to see when a certain picture was taken, whether the flash fired on you camera, image size, and more.
Drawbacks / flaws:
In conclusion: Fast and reliable, simple yet powerful, IrfanView is a very good image viewer. I recommend you try it and see for yourself.
