WinSCP is a SFTP (
SSHFile Transfer Protocol) and a SCP (Secure CoPy) client for Windows using (
SSH (Secure Shell).
When I used the program for the first time, I was amazed by the resemblance with
Total Commander. The main difference between the two is that WinSCP is used for uploading files to a server, by using public-key cryptography in order to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of data exchanged between the two computers.
In order to establish a session with a remote machine, you need to provide a host name, port number, user name, password, and a private key file. You can connect using a SFTP, a SFTP (which allows SCP fallback), or a SCP protocol. Sessions and the last used remote or local directories can be remembered by the program.
The program has many useful features. I'd like to mention the possibility to synchronize a local directory with a remote directory and the possibility to execute
PuTTY SSH terminal. You can also compare and keep directories up to date.
The interface can be set to look like Windows Explorer or Norton Commander, depending on which you like the most. There are some useful shortcut buttons: 'go to root directory', 'go to parent directory', 'go to home directory'. The toolbars are fully customizable, so that you can choose the items that help you increase your productivity.
Pluses: The customizable interface makes it extremely easy to use for users accustomed to Windows Explorer as well as for users who frequently use
Total Commander.
Drawbacks / flaws: In conclusion: One of the best Safe File Transfer Protocol client programs for Windows.
