 | | Google Chrome is a brand new Web browser created in order to make the Web faster, safer and easier. That's the official description. This new Google product combines technology licensed from Mozilla, AppleWebKit, Chrome and Safary.
Now, let's have a closer look at this brand new Web browser. The first positive impressions: you can import items (favorites/bookmarks, search engines, saved passwords and browsing history) from Internet Explorer and Firefox.
In terms of usability, there's an address bar where you can either enter an URL or the keywords for a Web search. The multi-tabbed interface is something we are all used to. However, we're not used to the missing menu and toolbars. Only the navigation buttons are being displayed while the menu will be accessed by clicking it's button on the interface. The browsing speed is quite fast, regardless of the rich content of the webpages: Flash, JavaScripts or other embedded items.
Google Chrome also offers a secure browsing environment: besides the pop-up blocker and cookie control, you can turn on the 'Phishing and malware protection' feature. SSL certificate management is an available option for a safer browsing.
After taking the acid3 Web Standards test, Google Chrome obtained a score of 76 out of 100, compared to Opera 9.51 (84/100) Firefox 3.1 (71/100).
Pluses: Developers will find some useful tools such as a JavaScript debugger, a Resource Inspector, and a funny 'Stats for nerds' feature. Another plus is the 'Incognito' browsing mode, which allows you to browse the Web without having to delete your cache or temp folders afterwards.
Drawbacks / flaws: A big minus is the lack of an RSS/Atom reader. Sometimes it may crash when viewing pages containing Flash videos or it may simply crash for no reason (unknown error).
In conclusion: Since it's a beta release, you may expect errors now and then, but overall, this is a fine piece of software. I'm looking forward to the first final release. This app is definitely worth a try.
