 | | Maybe you've heard about 'tcpdump' from one of your friends who use Linux. Well, if you haven't, you should know that 'tcpdump' is a network packet sniffer which enables a user to monitor and log network traffic. This application was originally developed for UNIX systems, and now it's available on Windows.
Before we go any further, you should know that this program is only a command line utility, so it doesn't have a user interface. The output data can be logged into a file, for later viewing and analysis. By default, 'tcpdump' prints out the headers of all packets that are received or sent through a network interface. However, you can use a boolean expression for matching only the network packets that you are interested in.
When you stop the program, it prints usage statistics. These statistics include the number of packets that were processed, dropped, or filtered.
Pluses: Tcpdump does not require any third party drivers for intercepting network traffic. It is a standalone executable, which includes everything needed to monitor networks (even 1Gbit ones).
Drawbacks / flaws: What I don't understand is the price of this network utility. I can't imagine why a free and opensource application for Linux would cost so much on Windows.
In conclusion: Tcpdump is designed for advanced users, who need a way of monitoring and analyzing their network traffic.
