 | | PeaZip is an Open Source a compression utility as well as a file joiner/splitter. The program can also help you encrypt/decrypt archives.
The program package comes as a ZIP archive. This means that there's no need to install it. Just unZIP it into a folder of your choice and run the executable file. The good thing about it is the fact that the program can be transported and run from USB Flash memory sticks.
The interface is neat and the options are grouped into tabs. This makes the program easy to configure and use. You can use it to create and unpack 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2/TBZ2, GZip/TGZ, LPAQ, PAQ, PEA, QUAD, TAR, UPX and ZIP archives. In order to be able to work with other formats, you can visit the producer's website and download plugins. However, the program contains all the necessary options needed for archiving or encryption. You can split files and join them back together and you can encrypt archives using 256 bit keys. The program can be used in command line.
Besides compressing, encrypting and splitting files, you can benchmark your system using MIPS rating. MIPS stands for 'Million Instructions Per Second' and is probably the most useless benchmark ever invented. The MIPS rating of a CPU refers to how many low-level machine code instructions a processor can execute in one second. Unfortunately, using this number as a way of measuring processor performance is completely pointless because no two chips use exactly the same kind of instructions or execution method.
Pluses: The portability, the possibility to extract data from ISO files.
Drawbacks / flaws: I see the lack of support for RAR archives as a major drawback.
In conclusion: In all, this is a good application, but there would have been nice if the program handled more archive types.
