 | | 'Remote Desktop Connection' is a program that allows you to connect remotely to machines that run Windows OS.
This application supports several Windows versions, such as Windows XP Professional, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, Windows 2000 Datacenter Server, and Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition. However, it doesn't support Windows Vista.
This application is built for PowerPC, but it runs on machines that are powered by Intel chips. It doesn't use many resources and it is quite stable.
The application allows you to customize the connection preferences. The settings are structured into the following categories: General, Display, Local Resources, Programs, and Performance.
In the 'General', you can set the username, password, and domain name, as well as save the settings to a file. You can also add these details to your keychain.
In the 'Display' tab, you can set the screen resolution, the number of colors, and the display that the remote desktop shows. These settings should be used according to your connection bandwidth available.
The 'Local Resources' tab allows you to use some resources available on the remote computer. For example, you can customize the sound settings like, leaving the sound on the remote computer, bringing the sound to your Mac, or not playing the sound at all. You can also use disk drives and shared printers. You can remap your keys and mouse actions such as, setting a key that can be used as the Windows key, as well as emulate the right-click when you use a single button mouse.
The 'Programs' tab allows you to start a program at logon. However, you need to provide the path of the program from the remote PC and the start directory.
The 'Performance' tab provides settings for the connection speed, which can optimize your performance. You can also manually check or uncheck the options that can influence the performance. However, it is recommended that you know how these settings influence the behavior of the remote connection.
Pluses: It allows you to connect remotely to PCs that run Windows OS. It also gives you various options that can customize the behavior of this connection.
Drawbacks / flaws: The application doesn't support remote connections to a machine that runs Windows Vista. The application doesn't have the support for Intel based Macs, but it can run on these machines.
In conclusion: This is the official client that gives you remote connectivity to a machine that runs MS Windows. Therefore, you can take advantage, on the supported operating systems, of what the Remote Desktop Connection protocol has to offer.
