DupKiller 0.8.2

Duplicate files can waste a lot of space on your hard disk. If you want to search and remove them you can use DupKiller. This software not only searches for duplicates with same size, date or contents, it can also find similar files with its built in, advanced algorithms.

I recommend that you don't scan folders created by your operating system because if you delete system files (even though they are duplicates) you may render your computer unusable. In Windows XP these are, among others: "Documents and Settings", "Program files" and the Windows install directory.

The program has a built in viewer which can be used when you are not sure whether to delete a duplicate. You can also configure search plugins. When installing the program you have two search plugins available: a file comparer and an image comparer. Both perform duplicate content verification based on the options you set.

I tried to search my removable drives for duplicates but when I asked DupKiller to show these drives the program stopped responding for a couple of seconds. Also, when I tried to search my entire hard disk for duplicates, memory usage for this software jumped from 3 MB used to over 80 MB used.

The user interface is structured intuitively, including nice animation effects. One can access the options he wants to modify in a user friendly way. There are buttons on the left side of the main window and each opens a different set of scan options on the right. Once the scan is finished, the list of duplicates or similar files appears automatically.

Pluses: Simple configuration of search options.

Drawbacks / flaws: Big memory usage while searching.

In conclusion: With DupKiller you can search for any type of duplicate files, including documents, music files, and so on.
