 | | HijackThis is the word that is on everybody's lips lately. It's a freeware system tool which can help you remove many spyware and adware products from your system. The downside is that HijackThis is developed for advanced users. If you are not an advanced Windows user, you'll have to post the scanning log to a forum, and ask for help there. Another option you have is to use a search engine, like Google for example, to find information about what you are removing from your system.
It doesn't contain any spyware definitions, so you'll have to do the detective work yourself. The program offers you the option to delete any kind of startup entry or file, to kill any process, to view important information about each process running on your system (including DLL files that were loaded by it), and more. Of course, if you delete something you shouldn't have, you may render your system unusable. HijackThis makes backups, but they can only be used if you can start the program.
With this program you can also delete a Windows XP service, delete any Add/Remove Software entry, delete a file on reboot, or edit your hosts file. It supports automatic update checking, so make sure you have the latest version installed.
Pluses: The publisher added an Alternate Data Streams (ADSs) scanner. ADSs seem to be the newest way for browser hijackers to hide their files.
Drawbacks / flaws: Not recommended for rookie users.
In conclusion: Features a lot of useful functions and tools, it's fast, and easy to use. Unfortunately if you don't know for sure what you are doing, you shouldn't use it. Strongly recommended only for advanced users.
version reviewed: 1.99.1 HijackThis Publisher's Description HijackThis, a general homepage hijackers detector and remover. Initially based on the article Hijacked!, but expanded with almost a dozen other checks against hijacker tricks. It is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks.
It does not target specific programs/URLs, just the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites.
As a result, false positives are imminent and unless you are sure what you're doing, you should always consult with knowledgable folks (e.g. the forums) before deleting anything. | | | | Download HijackThis | Screenshots
