Having an alternative to Windows Media Player or other mainstream media players can be important. In many cases, WMP may not give you the performance or level of customization you want or need. Its times like these that having apps like Xion Audio Player are important. It’s a media player for your Windows PC.

Xion Audio Player is an easy to use music player with a very powerful skinning system. The app has full animation support, contains support for playlists and has seamless playback and crossfading support. You can further tweak its sound quality with is built in 10 band equalizer, with built in presets.

Xion Audio Player reminds me a great deal of WinAmp and all the cool skins that I used to use with it way back in the day. The player has decent performance and is easy on the resources. Its skinning system is said to be fairly easy to use if you’re graphically inclined, and includes the ability to customize hot keys.

Xion Audio Player is really cool; but hasn’t seen an update in almost 3 years. It supports MP3 and OGG, and it also supports Shoutcast and Icecast streaming formats. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support any DRM encoded formats.

2CFILM, a newly founded film company, recently launched its first project. Named APP, the project is actually a motion picture that involves the usage of your mobile as an additional screen. Your device will be fully synchronized with the movie in order to receive extra content while watching the movie in your beloved cinema.

APP will be the first film in a series of similar titles produced by 2CFILM to feature this technology. Good news is that this technology will be brought by an application based on  SyncNow^® digital watermarking developed by Service2Media and Civolution for iPhone and Android devices.

The movie is about obviously an app that becomes autonomous and dangerous. Nothing new on the narrative side, but the good thing is that the audience will be able to follow a parallel storyline via the app on their mobile phone while still watching the movie. Overall you will get a new dimension of the movie right in your pocket. APP is due for release in the Netherlands on 24 February 2013, and will be distributed by Just Film Distribution.

The partnership between 2CFILM, Service2Media and Civolution  will not end here. They will bring this technology not only in cinemas, but also on DVD’s, television and online TV channels. As Edvard van ‘t Wout, Founder, 2CFILM, states:

Everest is a system information utility and auditing tool designed for home users. The product has been around for some time and development on it stopped several years ago. The product is effectively discontinued. However, do not be discouraged by this: it has useful functionality.

Everest can analyze and present through a helpful ‘windowsy’ hierarchical file interface information about your pc. This includes computer, motherboard, display, multimedia, storage, network, DirectX and devices. It will collect a good amount of information, and is a useful way of finding out what is available on a PC, for example, it detects hard drive controllers.

This information can be output to local disk, network share, e-mail or ADO database connections in text, CSV, HTML or XML formats. It has a ‘Favourites’ tab to which you can add those things you are most interest in. It is also useful if you need to benchmark one PC with another – it enables the collection and comparison of data such as memory reads, writes, latency.

If you are persistent enough to be able to stay in control in the face of unexpected error messages you may get some benefit from this tool. It has grown up and pay for siblings (now at FinalWire Ltd) which will do everything Everest does and more, and are up to date with new drivers, devices etc., however the point is that Everest Home is free. It is a good starting point for collecting PC information and is worth an initial look.
