ISOBuster is most popular for rescuing data from damaged CDs and DVDs. The ability to retrieve lost data, particularly when it has sentimental value, like photos, or business value, like documentation is invaluable.

There is a free version with limited functionality, and a Pro version, which unlocks high-end data recovery tools. However, for most people, the functionality available in the free version is more than enough to recover data from damaged or corrupted disks. ISOBuster supports a wide range of formats and works under all the Windows versions from Windows 2000 to Windows 7.

The one thing I really like about Macs is its ability to distribute software on disk images. Most software is actually distributed in downloadable disk images and run or installed right from the image. This is one reason why I really like PowerISO. It’s a disk image editing and creating tool for Windows.

BDlot DVD ISO Master is a breeze to use from download to your final product. You start off with a 2.5 MB zip file and in less than a minute have BDlot DVD ISO Master fully installed. The program itself is small and easy to navigate – it is just a single window featuring two tabs. One tab is for converting DVDs to ISOs and the other is for burning your ISOs to DVD. Using the program is also highly intuitive, and basically idiot-proof. You just need to select your DVD and then select your ISO’s save destination. If you want to you can remove region coding and some copy protection, but in either case when you are ready to go the giant blue ‘Run’ button makes it obvious what you need to do. In a few minutes, your DVD will be converted to an ISO with no change in size. The ISO burner in the next tab is equally simple to use.

This program simply couldn’t be simpler, and while there are a few options such as video downsizing and notifications that could be nice, overall any criticism just feel like nit-picking. A lovely little program.

PassMark released a new version of their free mount utility OSFMount. Although it has been released as a major update, at a first look you won’t see any differences in its latest version. But I will show you that OSFMount is actually the most complete mount utility from the market. Let’s see:

Even though nothing is official yet, and there are thousands of rumors about how Windows 8 will be, I decided to roundup any rumor and pack them in a nice and tidy post.

First rumor that everybody is “huffing” and “puffing” is the Windows 8 built-in market place.

The screenshot does remind me of something, but I can’t put my finger on what exactly. The principle is quite easy and most of us are used with it from Apple. Lots of apps, one place, secure download, easy install etc..

Windows 8 Smartscreen – this is a security feature that checks any files you open. I know what you would say, your antivirus does that, Microsoft Essentials does that, but this one is built-in. This feature is currently used by Internet Explorer and MSN

Windows UI Auto Color – basically the Aero will determine your wallpaper dominant color and change automatically its interface.

You will also be able to customize the interface elements individually, like taskbar, start menu and so on.

There is also a rumor that now you will be able to open your ISO files and mount them directly from the operating system.

This feature is long-time desired for many windows users all around the world. I don’t want to be a critical, but I really wonder where they got this idea from. (Mac OS X .dmg)

You will also find a built-in PDF reader app currently named Windows 8 AppX PDF Reader.

I am sure many windows users sooner or later had to reinstall the operating system due to different errors or problems. Windows 8 might come with a “reset” button; not a hardware but a software one. This feature should reset the OS and restore it to its factory settings. There is quite a buzz about this feature, according to the rumors it will take only minutes, but nobody knows how exactly and what will happen to your installed applications.

If this feature will keep your current apps installed, your files or will erase everything and leave you with a fresh start, we don’t know yet, but surely looks like Microsoft got some hints from Appstore why wouldn’t they create also something like Time Machine.

There are also rumors like Log-in using facial recognition and the PC camera, Faster Start-up, Better and more useful Help and Ribbon based Windows Explorer.

DVDFab Blu-ray Copy was updated to 8.0.8.2 version with an added option: Create .miniso file in output folder to be mounted by DVDFab Virtual Drive . It can produce a new format (.miniso) from now on, then DVDFab Virtual Drive 1.2.0.0 or later version can mount this one with image file, and the output Blu-ray folder with .miniso file in it can be played by PowerDVD or other Blu-ray software player since just simulates a normal ISO image file.

The new feature has been implemented because some Blu-ray player software cannot play Blu-ray movie by folder, such as PowerDVD. But if you just copy Blu-ray movie to folder on hard drive for backup, it is hard to watch it. So in this update, Blu-ray Copy supports to copy Blu-ray movie to the folder on your hard drive with a file in the format of .miniso included. Then you can use DVDFab Virtual Drive to mount the .miniso file in, and play the Blu-ray folder content by PowerDVD, just like playing a normal ISO image file.
