Keep your PC running at peak performance System Cleaner

If I had a dime for every time I had a friend come to me and ask for help in getting their PC up and running after a crash, I could probably retire a rich and happy man. Windows is an interesting operating system, in that it might be the most popular on the desktop, but it certainly isn’t the most well-constructed. Its so easy to make it fall down. That’s one of the reasons why I like applications like System Cleaner. It’s a Registry and optimization tool for Windows.

System Cleaner is an advanced registry cleaner and system optimization tool that cleans, repairs and optimizes your PC to minimize seizures and crashes. With System Cleaner, you will see an immediate increase in PC performance and a decrease in crashes. System Cleaner allows you to quickly and easily scan for issues on your PC and then repair them in a single action. All major tasks, such as removing junk files, defragmenting hard drives, repairing registry errors, optimizing your internet connection and identifying security vulnerabilities can be done with just a couple of mouse clicks.

System Cleaner has an automatic maintenance mode that allows you to clean and optimize your PC to keep your computer running like new. Automatic Maintenance allows you to perform maintenance tasks to keep your PC in top shape. If you’re not sure what’s on your computer or how it got there, System Cleaner’s Disk Cleaner can show you and help you keep your computer running clean.

If you’re an old computing pro like me, its often easy to forget how many programs you’ve got installed, have uninstalled or deleted or the number of files that were copied to and from it, and so on. Most of these “tracks” are still sitting somewhere on your computer, and Disk Cleaner can help you recover all the wasted space used by this junk information.

When your PC’s performance starts to tank, the Registry is often the first place you need to look System Cleaner offers a way to help you look at the Windows Registry. Its a set of data files used to help Windows how it looks, operations and ultimately, where programs store their data. Over time, parts of the registry become invalid or point to locations that no longer exist. Registry Cleaner allows you to find and resolve all the registry problems that can cause errors and unwanted PC behavior. After using Registry Cleaner to identify and remove problems, the recently invalid entries removed leave empty spaces, meaning that the size of the registry remains unchanged. System Cleaner can condense and optimize the Registry. Loading a smaller registry is faster than loading a big one.

Keep your hard disk in tip-top shape with O&O Defrag

Keeping your spinning media running at peak performance isn’t always as easy as it might sound. Yes, Microsoft has included Defrag in Windows since Windows 95; but the application is basic, and does only the bare minimum in keeping your hard drive running well. This is why I like O&O Defrag. It’s one of the best Windows hard drive defrag utilities on the market today.

O&O Defrag helps you maximum the performance on your PC. If you work on your computer a lot, then after a while, you’re going to notice slow system and program starts, endless rendering and memory processes, or even system crashes. The first thing most people will recommend you do is to try optimizing or defragging your hard drive.

The benefits are well documented. Defragmenting your PC can accelerate the speed your runs and responds to disk activity requests. In the latest version of O&O Defrag, you can now see what the program does for your system thanks to its graphics and statistics displays. They give you a before-and-after Defrag contrast on your hard drives usage as well as file fragmentation status.

Aside from the basic PC performance features you get, O&O Defrag offers some really nice advanced features. The application adapts itself to your PC usage patterns and system loads with Activity Guard. It’s only going to run when you need it to, based on historic use; and won’t get in the way of your computing activities. Best of all, it works on both conventional, spinning media hard drives as well new SSD, without damaging these new solid state storage devices.

Keep your PC running at peak performance with Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro

One of the biggest problems that most Windows PC’s have is poor performance.  After all the hardware tweaking is done and you’ve maxxed your RAM out, if your PC is still slow, and you don’t have a virus, you might need to check the fragmentation level of your hard drive. That’s one of the reasons why I like Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro. It’s a hard drive utility for Windows; and its one of the best.

Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro has four different disk optimization algorithms. Use the Optimize by Access Time method when you want to access frequently used files. The Optimize by Prefetch Layout algorithm speeds up your system loading and application startup. If your goal is to reduce future file fragmentation, the Optimize by Change Time algorithm is the one for you. For complete, refined control, the Optimize by Disk Zone algorithm allows you to manually specify which file types or individual files should be written to faster parts of the drive. Its just a matter of choosing the right method that’s best for you.

Keeping your free space free and uncluttered is important to fast disk access.  With the Free Space Consolidation algorithm, you can greatly slow down the process of file fragmentation. This optimization algorithm merges your drive’s free space into a large contiguous block, making it possible for new files to be written without fragmentation.

The one thing that won’t defrag on a Windows system while its running, are system files currently in use.  These are often in use when a defrag program runs, and as a result, they won’t defragment. Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro’s new Offline Defragmentation engine makes it possible to defragment these important system files. Offline Defragmentation is performed on system boot, before the operating system loads and consolidates the MFT, your Paging file, your Hybernation file and your Windows Registry. Defragmenting system files will make your PC more responsive, speed up system loading and boost its overall performance.

Keep your PC running in top condition with Norton Utilities 15

I remember back in the day when Norton Utilities was actually written by Peter Norton. They were THE set of utilities to have for your DOS based PC, and in many ways today, offer a great deal of protection and peace of mind. That’s why I feel that this PC based, Windows utility package is a must have.

Norton Utilities helps your PC run like new. With them you can speed up PC performance and boot time, fix common PC problems with a single mouse click, reduces launch time of applications by optimizing the registry, increase storage and performance by defragmenting and cleaning up the hard drive and of course, recuing accidentally deleted files. It’s a package that most every Windows user should seriously consider purchasing.

Norton Disk Doctor identifies and fixes potential problems that can lead to hard drive crashes. You can use it to save your bacon, should you start experiencing random data errors in files you know are uncorrupted elsewhere. Norton UnErase lets you quickly restore accidentally deleted files that may be hidden on your hard drive, provided they space they occupy hasn’t been overwritten with other data. Norton Smart Updates keeps Norton Utilities up-to-date by automatically installing product updates. Startup Manager improves PC boot time by choosing which programs will load at startup time and Norton Service Manager optimizes active Windows services so applications can run simultaneously without your PC experiencing any slowdowns.

Smart Defrag the easiest way to defrag

Keep your hard drive running at peak performance with this handy piece of must have freeware. Any PC user will tell you, after a while – after installing applications and creating data files – at some point, your PC will need to be defragmented.  PC’s tend to place data anywhere it can see space. This is fine when your drive is relatively empty. Things get complicated as it fills up with data.

If your PC’s performance is bad – if it’s slow – the first thing I always check is the defrag level. If the drive is highly fragmented, the PC’s performance is going to be bad. Smart Defrag helps improve your PC’s performance by efficiently defragmenting and optimizing your hard drive. With its “Install it and forget it” feature, Smart Defrag works quietly in the background, keeping your hard disk running at its best. Performance issues and crashes will become a thing of the past.

This application is one of the very few where no cons could be easily identified. It’s free, small, fast and good at what it does. If you’re a Windows user, and are looking for a tool to defrag your hard drive with, this is a must have. It’s better than the tool that comes with Windows and is easy to use, and above all, it’s free.

O&O SpeedCheck

Defragmentation is a necessary operation for any stable system. But its result may vary from system to system depending on each configuration. You can get a long process duration and it may not be distinguishable. So instead of doing it anyway and losing time, you may want to check if your system really needs such an operation and what are the results in case you may want to apply such an operation.

O&O SpeedCheck is a free portable utility that simulates the effects of a defragmentation on your computer. It will simulate a fragmented and defragmented state on your system. This means that the program will simulate reading files that are fragmented and then re-reads them as they were defragmented. No data is written in the simulation and no real files are used for reading.

Files are read continuously one after the other on a hard disk level from the start of partition C:. The whole process takes around 8-10 minutes depending on your harddrive capacity. At the end of the simulation you will be shown a comparison of the two test times, and the possible increase in speed available to you. In this way you will get the picture how your PC can gain speed if you will defrag your system.

Both test runs are carried out five times, in order to eliminate any side effects caused by the applications that run in the background. Anyway, you should still close all the applications that run in background in order to get a precise result. File operations in particular can lead to a distortion of the result.

O&O SpeedCheck is a simple and useful tool that might save you time in understanding the need of your system for defragmentation. But it also promotes O&O Defrag by pointing you to its download site after finishing the simulation. Good thing is that you don’t have to choose this program. Just ignore the message and carry on with your work.

Use Defraggler to defrag your entire hard drive, or individual files

Disk defragmentation results in better performance of your computer. That’s why Windows has a build-in tool with this purpose. However, most people avoid defragmenting their disks, even if we all know that it is recommended and can improve PC performance. The reasons is simple: the process takes too long to complete.

One of my favorite third party defragger and also the fastest out there is Defraggler – a tool developed by Piriform – the company behind both CCleaner and Recuva. Defraggler allows to defragment and optimize your local drives or a single file, several files or an entire folder.

Defraggler is also very simply to use. If you would like to analyze your drive to determine how fragmented is prior to defragmentation, just use the Analyze button. Once the analysis will finish, it will show you the visual drive map along with the fragmented files. Sometimes, you simply don’t need to defragment your hard drive, expecially if you’re working with a relatively new PC, you’ve defragmented your drive recently, or you don’t use your PC much.

Your hard drive needs to be defragmented? Simply click the Defrag button. If you want to save some time, there’s is a feature called Quick Defrag, which completes the process 3-4 times faster. However, the compromise, though, is that it won’t use the most intensive, optimal algorithm to reorganize your files. To use this feature, simply click the down-arrow next to Defrag button and select Quick Defrag.

Another great feature is the ability to move large files to the end of the hard drive. Your computer can accesses files faster if they’re at the start of the drive. Defraggler can put the large files you probably don’t access that often (videos, for example) at the end of the drive so that Windows can find the smaller files faster which are accessed more often.
