What’s the first thing you do when you buy a new computer…well, besides turn it on, of course? You check out all of the specs and components of course! Some of the best fun can be in discovering just how powerful your new computer is. That’s why I like applications like Speccy. It’s a system utility for Windows.

Speccy gives you detailed statistics on every piece of hardware in your computer. You get detailed info on your CPU, Motherboard, RAM, graphics cards, hard disks, optical drives, audio support, etc. Additionally Speccy tells you the operating temperatures of your different components, so you can easily see if you’ve got a heat problem.

While Speccy may seem like an application for system administrators and power users, it’s easily usable by everyone. If you need to add more memory to your system, for example, you can check how many memory slots your computer has and what memory is already installed. Then you can go out and buy the right type of memory to add on or replace what you’ve already got.

If you’re going to be selling your PC, you can use Speccy to quickly list out the components. If you’re buying a PC, you can use Speccy to check that the computer has what the label says it has.

Speccy is a decent application; and the cost is definitely right. While the app is free, a system information app is something that you won’t use every day. However, it does a very good job for what it does. If you need to find out what components you have in your PC, Speccy is a great app to do that.

I create training materials all the time. Part of what I do for my day job occasionally requires me to train end users in some kind of computer based process or procedure. Creating a great screencast happens in three simple steps: Record, Edit and Share.

If you’re using PowerPoint to give a presentation that you want to record for use by invitees who couldn’t attend the initial presentation, Camtasia’s toolbar inside PowerPoint makes it easy to record your presentations, either live or from your desk.  TechSmith’s exclusive SmartFocus technology keeps track of where the action happens on your computer screen during your recording. It then produces a video that zooms in on the parts you need to show.

Once you have your content recorded, Camtasia Studio allows you to spruce it up.  You can easily create callouts by adding a graphic over your video to direct the attention of your viewers. You can also link to an external webpage or jump to a part of the video.  If you’re stuck for the right graphic to use, Camtasia Studio comes stocked with professionally-designed assets you can drag-and-drop into your video. You can also the store your callouts, title slides, and other assets for re-use and sharing later.

After you have your screencast created, the final step is sharing it with your audience.  You can share to YouTube and Screencast.com, TechSmith’s video hosting service.  You can also produce videos in a variety of formats including, MP4, FLV/SWF, M4V, AVI, WMV, MOV, RM, Animated GIF and MP3 (for audio only).

Months back, when Microsoft has released its official Windows 8 Developer Preview Build, we presented the best elements out of the Windows 8 keynote and among them, there were some cool options such as to refresh and reset your PC. This means that you can removes all personal data, apps, and settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows using the Reset option or, keep all personal data, Metro style apps, and important settings from the PC, and reinstall Windows using the Refresh option.

In some cases, you might just want to remove everything and start from scratch manually. But in other cases, you’re removing your data from a PC because you’re about to recycle or decommission it. For both of these situations, you can easily reset your Windows 8 PC and put the software back into the same condition as it was when you started it for the very first time (such as when you purchased the PC). Reset is mainly for those who want everything wiped from their computer to ensure your drive doesn’t contain any personal data before you give it away or sell it.

For those of you who worry about data that may still be recoverable after a standard reset, especially on PCs with sensitive personal data, there will be also an option in Windows 8 to erase your data more thoroughly, with additional steps that can significantly limit the effectiveness of even sophisticated data recovery attempts.

Resetting your PC can take you back to square one if you encounter a problem, but that’s clearly a very heavy weight solution, something you’d only do as a last resort. But what if you could get the benefit of a reset – starting over with a fresh Windows install – while still keeping your stuff intact? This is where Refresh comes in handy. Refresh functionality is just like resetting your PC but your data, settings, and Metro style apps are preserved.
