Microsoft Pushes Private Cloud Computing Forward With System Center 2012

Cloud computing

Cloud computing

Today at the Microsoft Management Summit, Microsoft Corporate Vice President Brad Anderson demonstrated how private clouds built with Microsoft technologies can help IT organizations meet their companies’ demands for more agile services. Anderson introduced the new System Center 2012, which will enable IT managers to deliver private cloud services that empower business teams, provide greater insights into application performance, and allow IT to carry forward current investments as they adopt public cloud computing.

System Center 2012: Managing More Than Virtual Machines

System Center 2012, slated for release later this year, enables IT managers to build private clouds with the infrastructure they know and own today — including other vendors’ platforms and virtualization technologies. In his keynote, Anderson demonstrated the Virtual Machine Manager capability in System Center 2012, available today as a beta release at http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/try-it.aspx. Using this core component of Microsoft private cloud solutions, IT managers can efficiently standardize infrastructure and application services and delegate them to business partners for fast deployment of applications.

Anderson also showed code name “Concero,” the new System Center 2012 capability that empowers department-level application managers to deploy and manage their applications on private and public cloud infrastructure while helping IT managers deliver greater flexibility and agility to their business teams.

System Center 2012 solutions will enhance the current Microsoft Hyper-V Cloud programs and offerings for private cloud computing, including the ability to best manage virtualized workloads. Anderson highlighted new findings from the Enterprise Strategy Group on the enterprise readiness and performance of Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V for best-in-class virtualization of Windows SharePoint Services, Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 and Microsoft SQL Server 2008. More information about these findings is available at http://www.microsoft.com/virtualization/en/us/solution-business-apps.aspx

Samsung Electronics Becomes the World’s First in Mass Production of Transparent LCD Panel

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announces that it began mass production of a 22-inch transparent LCD panel in March this year. The panels come in two types, the black-and-white type and the color type, and they have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680×1050) resolution.

Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use back light unit (BLU) and have 5% transparency, Samsung’s transparent LCD panel boasts the world’s best transparency rate of over 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type. The transparent LCD panel has a high transparency rate, which enables a person to look right through the panel like glass, and it consumes 90% less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using back light unit. It’s because a transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sun light, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power.

Also, Samsung’s transparent LCD panel maximizes convenience for not only manufacturers but also consumers by incorporating the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface.

Transparent display panels have endless possibilities as an advertising tool, which can be applied to show windows and outdoor billboards or used in showcase events. Corporations and schools can also adopt the panel as an interactive communication device, which enables information to be displayed more effectively.

Younghwan Park, a senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business, said, “Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication. With the world’s first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications.”

Google launches ‘+1’ button

Google announced this week that they are testing a button functionality similar to Facebook’s “like” button. Known as “+1”, the button is only available to Google profile/Gmail users. This button gives users the ability to show their approval for search result relevance. The button appears when you are logged-in to your account, next  to any search result.

While pushing the button, you will give a stamp to the search result that will be indexed more highly when linked friends perform the same search. Is like voting for a web-page or a web-site.  It appears that votes are not limited to only immediate connections. Actually, the votes are public and can appear in any search result.

At the moment this feature is only experimental but will appear in more places as the feature grows.

If you want to enter the experiment, check Google Labs.

Microsoft is looking for “multiple thousands” of Xbox 360 Live members to test a new Xbox 360 disc format; in exchange, Microsoft will send you a free copy of the best-selling Halo: Reach and other branded freebies.
“We are conducting an open call for US based participants for a public preview to help us prepare for an updated Xbox 360 disc format,” Major Nelson, the gamertag for Microsoft Xbox Live’s programming director Larry Hryb, announced on his blog.
“We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good,” he wrote.
To qualify, you must live in the continental United States and own an Xbox 360 console. Register at the Microsoft Connect site with your Windows Live ID connected to your Xbox Live Gamertag, Hryb wrote, then sit back and wait for Microsoft to notify you.
Microsoft Xbox 360 hosts public previews every year, most recently in December. But as 1Up.com notes, the tests usually just involve new apps on the Xbox 360 dashboard. This one includes physical items sent to participants.
